Is this the age of the computer? Maybe, but as powerful and flexible as computers can be, they are still merely tools. Without people, computers arenot of much use.

From a career viewpoint, this is not a problem. In fact, the need for persons trained to work with computers in their many dimensions has continued to grow. Computers are integral to modern life, and new applications are introduced every day. As computers become more and more pervasive, the potential for computer-related careers continues to grow.

I From Then to Now Long before mechanical calculating devices were invented, astronomers, navigators, and scientists relied on books of tables for their calculations. Thesewere completed by hand, typeset, and printed. Needless to say, calculations carried out by humans were subject to human error and the transcribing and typesetting produced additional errors. Thus, a new system had to be devised. The seventeenth-century mathematicians Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and Blaise Pascal attacked this problem by developing mechanical calculators that could perform the basic mathematical functions of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division and could do so with speed and fairly good accuracy. However, there were still problems with the creation and use of these devices, such as difficulties in building them. While some improvements were made from these early designs, in truth computing machinery didn’t show much improvement for almost 200 years.
